In early 2009, the Department of Social Services in Mecklenburg County (DSS) expanded its partnership with the Charlotte/Mecklenburg School System (CMS) to dramatically improve access to the Free/Reduced Lunch program. This project was implemented in order to automatically enroll children who were eligible, thereby insuring that they receive a nutritious meal daily. As of the end of the 2009-2010 school year, there were 9,049 students who had benefitted from this program.
