The Prince Georgeâs County Department of Corrections faces many of the same staff shortages, mandatory overtime, and critical incidents as other jails across the country. The number of staff who experience depression, anxiety, hypertension, and diabetes mirrors research that shows correctional officers are at higher risk for these ills along with the increased risk of suicide. To address these concerns the Director formed the Employee Support Unit and hired a Staff Psychologist to address the following objectives: ⢠To provide mental health consultation and crisis management; ⢠To refer staff members for appropriate treatment and assist in the coordination of care;⢠To work with the employee and their supervisor to coordinate accommodations in their job assignment or work schedule; ⢠To educate employees about the impact of chronic stress and the need for self-care;⢠To reduce the stigma around mental health treatment for public safety employees; and⢠To help create a positive and supportive work culture. These objectives have been addressed in several creative ways to include training, retreats, workshops and exercise. The Employee Support Unit has a holistic approach to solving issues that Correctional employees face continually. This two-year-old program is helping the department realize a happy and healthier workforce.
