Gloucester County has one of the most unique and historical colonial courthouses, with adjacent government buildings, in the United States. Restoration efforts have been conducted to restore the structures to their original compositions and to ensure that the buildings remain public assets for the next 250 years. The renovation work included removing the modern walls and the ceiling to expose the original plaster walls and corrugate steel ceiling. Carpeting was removed and great efforts were made to restore the rubber tiled flooring that had been installed early in the building’s history. Government offices occupied these buildings from as early as 1766 and now a recent renovation effort has made Gloucester’s Colonial Court Circle one of the county’s top tourist attractions.
