About the Program

Category: Libraries (Best in Category)

Year: 2020

MDPLS’s Cookbook Bookclub kicked off at the Pinecrest Branch in April 2019 with multiple goals. This program promotes good-natured camaraderie amongst county residents who are open to exploring new cuisines, allows proud home cooks to compare experiences, connects local chefs, restaurants, and small food markets to potential customers, and inspires new eyes to consider older cookbooks. Participation has been consistently large and after each meeting a flood of monthly congratulatory emails are received. Attendees have felt compelled to blog about the feast, create a step-by-step video of their cooking process, and take detailed photos of their ingredients. An article was even written in a culinary magazine showcasing the endeavor. This program connects with foodie trends, inspires discussions regarding health, ties to family histories through recipes, and shares everyone’s national and international food experiences and kitchen techniques. The possibilities of using this program to teach (ex. knife skills, Keto diet, etc.) and to explore (from local to regional to international themes) while we “travel in-place” are limitless.
