Gwinnett County DOT developed a master plan for implementing Connected Vehicle Technology that alerts drivers to hazards like approaching emergency vehicles and pedestrians in crosswalks.Connected vehicles communicate with roadway infrastructure and with other vehicles. They are not the same as automated vehicles, which can brake, steer, and change speeds. Gwinnett County believes a combination of connected and automated vehicles will eventually improve roadway safety.The plan selects Peachtree Industrial Boulevard as a demonstration Smart Corridor project. Heavy traffic on the southern part of the road and more rural conditions to the north make it ideal for testing. As part of the project, the County will install equipment along the route and on emergency vehicles and transit buses to allow traffic signals to change so intersections can clear before the vehicle arrives.
