Howard County Recreation & Parks developed Family Fun Kits in response to COVID-19 (it was difficult to hold in-person events) to replace their popular winter dances. Kits provided a safe and family-friendly activity for the community and were designed to be affordable; and supported local small businesses. Participants could register as a parent-child couple ($35) and they could add additional participants ($15 each). The department partnered with two local businesses to provide supplies. A local restaurant provided a discount on their take-home pizza kits and a local baker provided decorate-your-own-cookie kits. Each kit provided two personal pizzas, two sugar cookies and decorating supplies, themed crafts, activities, two mugs, two packs of hot chocolate and microwave popcorn. The January kits were snowflake themed, with crafts that included a wooden snowflake magnet, a snow globe necklace, a snowman magic scratch craft and winter coloring pages. The February kits were Valentine's themed, so the crafts included a Do-It-Yourself puzzle, Valen-SLIME, a heart magic scratch craft and valentine coloring pages. These kits were a huge hit and sold out for both themes. The department will continue these kits in the spring with a Mother's Day Tea Party theme and a Father's Day camping theme.
