Year: 2017

The Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) is committed to increasing family self-sufficiency by providing customers referrals to employment services that provide free job training and placement. During 2016, DCSS held two job court hearings for customers who were facing driver license suspension based on failure to pay support. When customers appear for their hearing, they are given three options to address their license suspension: 1) They could make a payment: 2) They could enroll in a free job training service; or 3) They could go to court where a Child Support Commissioner will review their case. A total of 88 customers appeared at their job court hearings. Of this group of customers: 39% enrolled in the free employment training program; and another 46% of customers made a payment, resulting in collections of $13,122 for local families. Based on the success of the job court hearings, similar hearings will be scheduled to connect customers with employment opportunities.
