Year: 2013

As a critical provider of literacy, learning and education in Mecklenburg County, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is the go-to resource for citizens seeking information. However, in early 2012, the Library was not a go-to resource for citizens with mobile devices. The website, www.cmlibrary.org, was not mobile-friendly and mobile offerings were limited and hard to find. In order to make Library services more accessible to Mecklenburg County citizens, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library decided to develop a mobile app with the end customer in mind. Working with the third party service Boopsie, the Library’s IT and Marketing & Communications departments collaborated on content, design and delivery platforms. As a result, the app is a customer hit with 4.5 stars on iTunes, an A+ rating from ApWords, and lots of positive feedback from library staff and customers. “Instead of going on the computer to request books and check the status and stuff, I can do it all on my phone :)” said one Google Play User. By the end of four months, there were over 4,000 unique monthly users and the app had been downloaded over 5,000 times.
