About the Program

Category: Personnel Management, Employment and Training (Best in Category)

Year: 2020

Firefighters have been described as “industrial athletes”. At any point during a shift they are required to jump from their seat, don protective gear weighing over 50 pounds, place a face piece on that limits their vision, pull and carry several hundred pounds of equipment in an emergency situation, while their heart rate races to near maximum levels for sustained periods of time. The physiological and psychological demands on a firefighter’s cardiovascular and muscular systems are extreme. The LC-CFRS Center for Fitness, Wellness and Support Services provides the “brick and mortar” for the Department to implement a strategic, centralized, structured and data-driven approach that is cost effective and seeks to improve firefighter health, occupational-readiness, and career sustainability. The facility is staffed by a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Behavioral Health Coordinator, and LCFR Captain assigned to the Officer of Health, Safety and Wellness. By focusing on a holistic wellness strategy managed by a data-driven approach with centralized provider resources LC-CFRS seeks to reduce injuries and related costs and improve resiliency and longevity to its first responders. The physical footprint of the facility contains the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), Work Performance Evaluation (WPE), Weight Room, Cardio Studio, Mobility/Yoga area, and classroom.
