The Port of Miami—a department of Miami-Dade County—is a recognized world leader in the cruise industry, as well as a major gateway for cargo shipments in the Americas. The benefits to the local economy are substantial, as are the inherent responsibilities, especially in the area of security. The Florida legislature passed amendments to the security procedures established for ports throughout the state. However, due to its focus on security issues over the past years, the more stringent measures using state-of-the-art application systems as well as streamlined standard operational procedures. The Port has consistently maintained an integrated approach to the security solutions; among the many systems that collaborate on enforcing security measures at the Port, the new Cargo Gate Vehicle Processing System is the most deserving of the “state-of-the-art” qualification due to its design and implementation. The system puts together top-of-the-line equipment, cutting-edge technology, and sophisticated software and middleware to enforce business and security rules at the most important point of entry to their restricted cargo areas; and it does so in a very efficient manner.
