Placer County’s Business Advantage Network (BAN), in collaboration with Legal Services of Northern California (LSNC), began a Clean Slate Clinic in February of 2015 to assist job seekers with a process of minimizing the impact of their criminal records on their employment efforts. The BAN Unit is a Division of Placer County’s Health and Human Services Employment Services program and works with public assistance recipients with the aim of helping them gain employment and become self-sufficient. Their motto is, “Get a job; get a better job; get a career”. The BAN Unit considers what barriers may be preventing their clients from finding work and discovered that a number of them were unable to obtain gainful employment due to past criminal history records. The Clean Slate Clinic provides assistance in reducing or removing past convictions, decreasing probation time, and applying for certificates of rehabilitation. Initially provided for CalWORKs public assistance recipients, the clinic is now open to any member of the public. Since implementation, the Clean Slate Clinic has assisted 86 individuals in applying for and benefiting from criminal remedies provided by law. Individuals who take advantage of this program have increased opportunities for employment that prior were beyond their reach.
