In 2015, Leon County, the City of Tallahassee and the American Red Cross partnered to launch a Build Your Bucket campaign, which urged citizens to create an emergency preparedness bucket filled with supplies in the event of a disaster. Having a disaster kit or bucket prepared prior to an emergency makes weathering and recovering from a storm easier. With the success of the 2015 Build Your Bucket event, Leon County and the City of Tallahassee established the event as an annual program to educate citizens on how to be prepared during the event of a disaster or emergency. The event is designed to help residents prepare for hurricane season. Area nonprofits and emergency management agencies participate in a family-friendly safety fair with demonstrations and fun exhibits. The target audiences for the 2016 Build Your Bucket campaign were all Tallahassee/Leon County citizens with a focus on students and citizens living on the Southside of the City/County.
