The Broward Leaders Water Academy is a new educational program, developed and launched through the collaborative efforts of Broward County and the South Florida Water Management District, and offered to policymakers and business leaders throughout Broward County to better inform them about Broward’s water resources and the significant factors that affect them. The Academy offers opportunities for participants to hone their knowledge of how water is obtained, moved, used, reused, financed, and affected by environmental factors, population growth, and the effects of climate change. It provides a foundation for good decision-making through the provision of one-of-a-kind educational materials, field experiences and forums for discussion of water resource issues. Being a coastal county with limited groundwater sources and many miles of canals and other surface waters, the viability of Broward’s economy and environment depend upon a sound knowledge among elected officials and business leaders about the factors and forces that shape water in Broward County. The Academy provides a focus in which individuals can gain this knowledge in a structured yet “small group” environment. This is accomplished through a series of sessions that provide distinctly different experiences and educational benefits.
