It is a question all parents ask themselves, wrestle with and just plain worry about: “What can I do to help keep my children safe — especially when I’m not there to physically protect them?” With neighborhood parks uniquely positioned to connect local families to resources that can improve quality of life and instill peace of mind, the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation has partnered with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Parks Bureau to bring the Joyful Child Foundation’s BRAVE program to local youth. Aimed at children ages 5-17, BRAVE is centered around hands-on workshops featuring age-appropriate lessons on safety and self-defense. These 90-minute sessions are designed to nurture each child’s ability to recognize potential dangers, verbalize discomfort or express a need for help, as well as provide lessons on how to physically resist abduction or assault.
