About the Program

Category: County Resiliency (Best in Category)

Year: 2010

Boulder County launched a Forest Health Initiative in 2007 to mitigate the effects of the Mountain Pine Beetle epidemic. A large part of this effort came in 2008 and 2009 when, in collaboration with Larimer County, Boulder County established a community biomass collection site to allow residents to drop off wood collected from private lands. The site helps people safely, and free of charge, dispose of wood from their properties. This project also partnered with Peak-to-Peak Wood, a local nonprofit, to get the marketable material to various processors in the area. Types of products that were successfully marketed were sawlogs, posts and poles, firewood, and mulch. The free, public community biomass collection sites are an innovation along Colorado’s Front Range.
