The Archaeology Workshop is an add-on component of the Orange County After School Zone’s summer program, the Summer Zone, serving middle school students grades 6 through 8. The Archaeology Workshop is a five-week program infused with engaging curriculum-based learning in a combination of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (“STEM” for short), Social Studies, and Visual Arts areas. The purpose of the Workshop is to foster excitement in the areas of STEM translating into multiple career possibilities as students explore the field of archaeology through hands-on and interactive activities in the following areas: forensic archaeology and excavation and survey techniques; underwater archaeological excavation and the principles of scientific scuba diving; common artifacts encountered in archaeological assemblages and how to analyze them; and research, historic records, folk lore, and interviews from a historic Floridian turpentine camp.
