Henrico County entered into a public/private partnership with the YMCA of Greater Richmond to provide residents in the county access to a state-of-the-art aquatic center. This facility provides residents access to swim lessons, water fitness classes, and is available for recreational use. In this partnership, Henrico County provided the capital funds to construct the Frank J. Thornton YMCA Aquatic Center and the YMCA of Greater Richmond takes on the daily operation and management of the facility. With this partnership, the county is able to provide citizens access to pool facilities without incurring ongoing expenses associated with pool operations. It also is a milestone in Henrico’s effort to make the county drown-proof. As a part of this partnership, Henrico County Public Schools will have access for their students to receive swim lessons and be made available for high school swim teams.
