Due to rising healthcare costs and to prevent health risk factors that detract from a healthy workforce, the Employee Wellness Program was rolled out in 2012. The Amazing Race is one of the most exciting and engaging events in the County of San Diego’s Employee Wellness Program. It is modeled after the popular TV show and involves teams of four competing against each other in physical and mental challenges during lunch time. Through the Employee Wellness Program and activities such as the Amazing Race, the Department of Human Resources seeks to encourage and engage employees in physical and recreational activities to improve their health and overall well-being. The Amazing Race also supports the County’s strategic initiative of Sustainable Environments. The Amazing Race helps to build camaraderie through a physically challenging competition of strength and wit. During the Race, each team visits stations around the County Operations Center campus where they must complete exercise or trivia challenges before they are given a clue to go to the next station. In 2014, a total of 119 teams (476 employees) participated in the Amazing Race and 110 county employees volunteered to register participants and work at the various stations.
