Under direction from the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, the San Diego County Health & Human Services Agency’s Aging & Independence Services is working collaboratively with many local community and public stakeholders and agencies to address Alzheimer’s disease and develop improved and new resources to mitigate its multiple impacts. A comprehensive, 10-year Implementation Plan, supported by local research and stakeholder input, was developed that is now guiding efforts to strengthen existing local resources and usher in new supports in such important areas as developing new pharmacological treatments; coordinating community responses to incidents of wandering; identifying affordable and available care services for those with the disease and support for their caregivers; developing clinical standards for the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and raising the public’s awareness and knowledge of the many resources available.
