The Suffolk County Department of Health Services (SCDHS) recognizes the value of seasonal influenza vaccination in reducing the burden of illness due to influenza. The Division also recognizes that many County employees of their families may not have obtained vaccination for the ongoing season. In order to reduce illness from influenza in workers and families, with resultant absenteeism and possible compromise of County agency functions, the SCDHS Division of Public Health offered free influenza vaccination to County employees and adult family members on November 19, 2010. In addition, the Division recognizes that during some public health emergencies, facilities normally available for use may not be accessible. Therefore, In this exercise, recently purchased inflatable tents were utilized with climate control and electric power provided by Portable Electrical Air Conditioning and Heating units (PEACH). Finally, because the Division recognizes that responding to public health threats must be a collaborative effort, this exercise included partners from a wide array of disciplines. Various departments within the county and divisions within the Department of health contributed expertise, personnel and equipment in order to successfully complete this mission.
