Category: Personnel Management, Employment and Training (Best in Category)

Year: 2018

In collaboration with multiple departments that fall under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements, the County Privacy Officer and the Travis County Auditor’s Office jointly created online e-Learning to comply with HIPAA. The course combines general HIPAA training material and department-specific training, so that employees only need to take a single course. The general HIPAA information is required for all employees in positions that are exposed to, or handle, protected health information. The department-specific training covers topics for employees in unique positions; e.g., corrections officers, probation officers, health/human services providers, benefits, IT, etc. For maximum availability, the course was created in two formats: an ‘internal facing’ option (accessible through the County network) and one that is web accessible for employees who work in the field on portable devices that may not be connected to the County network. The two course formats efficiently and effectively deliver training and information to employees and provide an ongoing resource afterwards. The course is developed internally, so the costs are minimal and can be adjusted easily if policies change. Employees can conveniently access the course whenever they need it, which increases productivity and decreases travel time and costs to attend in-person classes.
