In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs presented the ADA Silver Anniversary Summit on September 24-25, 2105 to explore ways to make the arts more accessible for people with disabilities. In partnership with the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts and the Florida Access Coalition for the Arts, this free Summit gathered more than 350 arts leaders to discuss accessibly and inclusion in the arts and how cultural organizations can make their programs more accessible for individuals with disabilities. Led by local and national experts on accessibility in the arts, panel sessions focused on strategies and best practices for access and inclusion in quality cultural programs including ADA compliance, the benefits of universal design, sensory-friendly programs, ASL, captioning and ways to enhance the creative experience for people with disabilities through innovative technologies such as The Beam®, that combines remote mobility and video conferencing to allow users who are physically unable to travel to virtually visit cultural institutions. The Summit showcased the talents of artists with disabilities including Karen Peterson Dancers, Waving Hands, Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually-Impaired "Better Chance" Music Production Program, and Antiheroes Project.
