About the Program

Category: Human Services (Best in Category)

Year: 2011

The incidence of the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older adults and adults with disabilities is underreported, as the signs and common indicators are not always recognized. In an effort to better educate law enforcement officers about common signs of abuse, neglect, and exploitation, as well as the reporting procedures of Adult Protective Services, the Services for Adults Division of Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services, along with Mecklenburg County Public Service and Information (PS&I), and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police (CMPD) and Fire Departments (CMFD), produced a video entitled, “Know the Signs.” This DVD is being viewed by all police officers in Mecklenburg County. It describes what adult abuse, neglect, and exploitation looks like, and gives the procedures for reporting this information to DSS. In addition to the DVD, wallet cards were distributed which provide a referral number, list the most common indicators, and provide an outline of the information that will be needed when reporting an incident. Better education of potential reporters will improve the ability of the community to protect those most in need.
