“Anak Ang Kat” (To Lift a Child Up) Artist Residency Program at the African Heritage Cultural Arts CenterThe Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs launched the Anak Ang Kat Artist Residency Program at the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center in 2015 to support the development of local artists and provide outstanding arts experiences for children and youth in Liberty City, an under-resourced neighborhood in Miami. The Center fosters the rich, diverse culture of people of African heritage through high quality instruction for youth in dance, drama, music, visual arts and film. The facility includes a black box theater, art gallery, concert hall, dance studio and classrooms. The Anak Ang Kat Artist Residency Program provides more than 100 students, ages 5-16, with the opportunity to train with performing and visual artists every year from September to May. Former artists in residence include Tarell Alvin McCraney (award-winning playwright and Oscar winner, Moonlight), Bianca Brewton (Dancer, Katy Perry; Beyoncé, Lemonade), Augusto Soledade (Guggenheim Fellow; Choreographer, Brazz Dance) and Marshall Davis, Jr. (World-renowned Tap Dancer; Dancer, Tony award-winning Broadway production of Bring in Da' Noise Bring in Da' Funk). The resident artists provide training opportunities and develop special projects with the students - producing and directing theatrical plays, composing music, developing choreographic works, and creating new visual art works. The residency culminates in a public performance or visual art exhibition.
