Key Takeaways
On November 7, NACo, along with six other intergovernmental organizations, sent a letter to congressional leadership calling for an end of the government shutdown. Counties, as the level of government closest to the people, rely on the predictability of federal funds to provide critical services to our communities, including public health, social services and emergency management.
NACo was joined by the National League of Cities, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the National Governors Association, the National Conference of State Legislatures, the Council of State Governments and the International City/County Management Association in sending this letter. As key intergovernmental partners, state and local governments rely on reliable and predictable federal funding to best serve our residents.
How does the government shutdown impact counties?
During a government shutdown, counties must continue providing essential services to our constituents, while many of the federal responsibilities are passed down to localities. The unpredictability of the shutdown makes it impossible for counties to predict when impacts will reach our communities, hindering our ability to plan and coordinate timely and effective responses.
NACo is seeking member feedback on how the government shutdown is impacting county operations. We appreciate your responses as we continue to call on our federal partners to work in a bipartisan way to keep the federal government fully operational.
