Counties Extend Appreciation for Election Workers Ahead of Election Day

WASHINGTON – Ahead of Election Day, the National Association of Counties (NACo) extends its appreciation to the hundreds of thousands of Americans who help carry out the election process, so that registered voters can cast their ballots.

The county role in election administration is extensive; in 36 states, counties have primary responsibility for election administration, and we share the work with cities and towns in six more. In 2024 alone, counties coordinated more than 630,000 poll workers across approximately 78,000 polling places on Election Day, in jurisdictions ranging from fewer than 100 voters to those serving more than one million. The latest available data show that more than 196 million registered voters live across 41 states and the District of Columbia.

County officials work before, during and after elections to facilitate federal, state and local elections. From registering voters and preparing ballots, to administering early voting, processing absentee ballots, ensuring election security, counting every ballot, reconciling results and ultimately certifying those results, counties do their part to safeguard our democracy.

“County election staff and countless volunteers work tirelessly year-round to administer accurate and secure elections,” said Matthew Chase, CEO of NACo. “As residents head to the polls, we encourage everyone to thank their local election workers.”
