On May 6, the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works favorably passed S. 3591, the America’s Water Infrastructure Act of 2020, and S. 3590, the Drinking Water Infrastructure Act of 2020. Both bills would reauthorize funding for water projects and programs, including those that govern water resources, clean water and drinking water systems, when the current authorization (P.L. 115-270) expires in September 2020. This legislation and the funding it would provide is critical for local governments who, as major owners, users and regulators of water resources and systems, are responsible for funding 95 percent of all local public water infrastructure needs.
