The National Association of Counties (NACo) today issued the following statement on the Environmental Protection Agency and Army Corps of Engineers’ memorandum on implementation of Section 404 permitting under the Clean Water Act:

“Counties appreciate the Administration’s focus on Clean Water Act Section 404 permitting, which can create new opportunities for state and local governments to play a greater role in implementing the Act.

“Counties are not only stakeholders but also key partners with the states and federal government in co-regulating water resources. Counties are major owners and operators of our nation’s infrastructure, and we are on the front lines of safeguarding water resources in our communities every day.

“We look forward to a continued, substantive dialogue on establishing practical, common-sense regulations that protect water resources without inhibiting our economic potential and community priorities.”
