Category: County Administration and Management (Best in Category)

Year: 2016

As the current workforce ages for the Workers’ Compensation Division there is a need to prepare and transition lower level employees into claim positions as they are vacated due to retirements. Programs available through professional organizations offer training and continuing education that prepare workers’ compensation professionals to promote into workers’ compensation claim management roles. As an example, these professional organizations charge $399 per student, per class. In order to prepare an employee to take on the role of claims adjuster, they would need to attend at minimum— three basic classes, costing $1,197 per employee. To reduce employee training costs, the County of Riverside has developed an internal training program that has been certified by the Insurance Education Association. The County of Riverside has graduated four students who have transitioned into claims adjusting positions. Additionally, there are nine employees currently in the process completing the course work. This will create a cost savings to the County of $15,561.00 The program was established in 2013.
