About the Program

Category: Health (Best in Category)

Year: 2019

The County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Warrior Hike Challenge was established to enhance communication and customer service with San Diego’s military community. It started small, but with the support of an employee group called VALOR and sponsors like SDG&E, REI San Diego, the San Diego River Park Foundation and the San Diego County Parks Society, the event has grown from 20 attendees to over 250. Completing the hike earns hikers bragging rights and an incredible sense of personal accomplishment. People love to hate it because of the physical, mental and emotional stamina it demands – the trail through El Capitan County Preserve is arguably the toughest climb in the county. Hosting family-friendly events at this site helps to remove some of the stigma that surrounds it; people can safely explore the wild and abundant acreage, safeguarded by enthusiastic rangers, volunteers and supporting businesses. A partner success story that not only satisfies operational goals but has more importantly forged stronger connections with a key San Diego demographic, the Warrior Hike Challenge has become a DPR staple event that both employees and customers look forward to every Memorial and Veterans Day weekend.
