The Baltimore County Police Departmentâs Violent Crimes Unit is a newly formed unit within the Criminal Investigation Division that investigated non-fatal shootings and other serious assaults. In addition, the unit proactively investigates gun trafficking and persons in possession of illegal firearms. This unit is designed to investigate and prosecute violent offenders before they commit crimes with firearms as well as to ensure the thorough investigation and case preparation for attempted murders when they do occur. The unit utilizes many resources including staffing an in-office agent from Parole and Probation to make sure that offenders who violate probation terms are charged immediately. The detectives in the unit were hand-picked and well trained having attended specialized training all over the country. The unit began in 2007 and, so far, has experienced a great deal of success.
