The Transfer Division Night Shift Program (Night Shift Program) is an additional work shift within the Transfer Division of the Miami-Dade County Public Works and Waste Management Department (PWWM). It was created to increase efficiency, improve productivity, and reduce costs associated with the transportation and transfer of solid waste between facilities. This newly established shift operates from 2:30 P.M. to 1:00 A.M., Monday through Thursday each week. It has allowed the PWWM to avoid traffic congestion, especially during the morning rush period, and thereby reduce travel time, fuel consumption and overtime expenses. Additionally, since more solid waste is being transported and transferred after normal working hours, there is less congestion at the final delivery location, the PWWM’s Resources Recovery Facility (RRF). This has resulted in shorter wait times and improved service for the PWWM’s external customers, such as municipal waste agencies and private waste haulers. The creation of the Night Shift Program has allowed the PWWM Transfer Division to transfer more waste with fewer personnel, while sustaining a 25% increase in productivity over more than 2 years, thus reducing overall expenses while providing an increased level of service to the County’s waste disposal customers.
