2010 NACo Achievement Award Winner

Richland County, S.C., SC

About the Program

Category: Civic Education and Public Information (Best in Category)

Year: 2010

Richland County’s education programs and annual Recycling event have curbed the temptation to dump tires and electronics on country roads or pour hazardous liquids into their drainage systems or into the ground, thereby helping prevent groundwater contamination. Since 2007, the County has seen an increase in recycling and a decrease in illegal dump sites, customer service complaints, and landfill tonnages. The County has also established new relationships with environmental and civic organizations as well as neighborhood associations. By providing their citizens with this type of event, coupled with various education tools, they are encouraging the proper disposal and recycling of items that are a danger to the environment.
