Year: 2016

In 2013, in response to an increase in contamination in the department’s single-stream recycling program, the Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM), created a marketing campaign to address residential recycling practices. Then known as the Miami-Dade Public Works and Waste Management Department, DSWM’s goal was to increase awareness of proper recycling procedures and to highlight the environmental benefits of recycling to its customers. To share this important information with Miami-Dade County residents, the department created the Recycle This, Not That educational campaign. The campaign features radio, television, print, online and transit advertising. This diversified marketing approach allows the department to educate residents about what recyclable materials are permitted in the single-stream program, while pointing out items that are not accepted or permitted in the program. The outcome of this campaign has been better public understanding of the single-stream program and a decrease in contaminants entering the recycling stream.
