The San Diego Immunization Registry (SDIR) is the County of San Diego’s Immunization Information Systems, which is a secure database used to track immunizations, reduce over- and under-vaccination, provide clinical decision support, and increase community coverage rates. Although, SDIR has been established since 1997 to register reported vaccinations, a new era of expanded utility and value was realized during several recent public health emergencies to track vaccination status for at-risk individuals and prevent unnecessary vaccinations. Combining the recent achievements of interoperability of vaccine reporting to SDIR through the local health information exchange (HIE) and a data driven public health response approach, new possibilities were realized for local health emergency response. In two recent local outbreaks (Hepatitis A and meningococcal serogroup B disease), SDIR provided an opportunity to leverage the local system to successfully track immunization status among at-risk individuals and provide up-to-date vaccination coverage information.
