Year: 2011

Sobroso y Saludable, or Healthy and Tasty, is a Latino health fair and festival that features a diabetes-friendly recipe competition that challenges local restaurants to cook-off for a cause. By creating and submitting original recipes, local restaurants combat diabetes, which affects 23.7 million Americans and is a risk for 57 million with pre-diabetes. Because diabetes disproportionally affects older Latinos, this event was designed to target diabetes awareness and management within this community in a creative and engaging way. In addition to diabetes-specific information, the event also featured a comprehensive health fair and community resource fair. As an annual festival, Sabroso y Saludable has an impact on the community far beyond the event by introducing attendees to local resources and ongoing support programs such as diabetes management, exercise, and healthcare in a trusted and safe environment. The event has helped to establish long-term relationships between the local government, non-profit agencies, and the Latino Community in Boulder County and has helped to better provide services to underserved Latinos.
