The Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs through its Art in Public Places program collaborated with the Miami-Dade County Transportation and Public Works Department to successfully restore The Miami Line, an iconic lighted sculpture at the Miami River Metrorail Bridge. Originally commissioned in 1984, The Miami Line, created by artist Rockne Krebs, is a highly visible sculpture with multicolored lights spanning the Miami River. The Miami Line, with its line of neon colors along the Miami River Metrorail Bridge, quickly became a signature visual landmark for the Downtown Miami skyline and has been featured in countless photographs, films and TV shows, including the popular eighties television series, Miami Vice. The Miami Line restoration project, comprised the complete replacement of approximately 600 linear feet of multicolor neon tubing with state-of the art LED technology. The project required the design, procurement, assembly, and installation of a custom LED system that faithfully replicated the artworkâs iconic neon glowing effect to the artistâs original color specifications. This restoration effort is a key component of the Department of Cultural Affairsâ commitment to caring for the more than 700 works of art in the Countyâs prestigious public art collection.
