Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley formed the Ashland/Cherryland Healthy Community Collaborative (ACHCC) in 2008 to achieve healthy and economically viable Ashland and Cherryland communi-ties. In 2015, the Collaborative was reimagined and now leverages the work of community and faith-based and social service organizations, educational institutions, businesses, and County departments so they intentionally address Ashland/Cherryland’s high poverty, unsafe streets, and poor health and education outcomes. The Sheriff’s Office and its auxiliary nonprofit Deputy Sheriffs’ Activities League drive the promotion making, linkages between health, livability infrastructure such as public gathering spaces, social connection, civic engagement, public safety, and systems that build “Community Capitals.” The combined efforts build the groundwork for a healthier, safer community. The Collaborative expands community and civic engagement, co-designing solutions with residents and increasing access to place-based programs – especially Alameda County sponsored services. Collaborative partners are forming organizations that increase residents’ voices in local government; sponsoring innovative events which provide venues for community entrepreneurs; providing award-winning training programs resulting in food businesses; removing blight and beautifying the commercial corridor; hosting a youth center serving more than 200 young people daily; and sponsoring an annual Ashland event which attracts over 2,000 families, introducing them to social services and health-related resources.
