The County of San Diego’s Portable Charging Station Program is the culmination of a collaborative effort to provide additional portable power resources to the region in the event of a prolonged power outage. Looking to address the lessons learned in the 2011 regional blackout, and recognizing that power-related events can be geographic in scope, the County of San Diego’s Office of Emergency Services (OES) spearheaded an effort to determine the logistical resources necessary to create a Portable Charging Station Program. Ultimately, OES worked with a variety of County departments and outside agencies to create and implement a fully functional portable charging station program to support charging stations for medical assistance devices anywhere in the region, either as part of an American Red Cross emergency shelter or as a stand-alone charging station. The program was fully implemented in 2017.
