About the Program
Category: Criminal Justice and Public Safety (Best in Category)
Year: 2019
Like many police departments across the nation, Gwinnett County (GA) saw a drastic decline â 47 percent â in the number of police officer applications from 2012 to 2016. Starting in 2017, the Gwinnett County Police and Human Resources departments began conducting police hiring events at different locations around the country throughout the year. In addition to local events at the Gwinnett Police Training Center, this recruiting effort extended to distant places such as Rochester, NY, Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando, FL. Gwinnett designed its hiring events to get the applicant through the entire Phase I of its hiring process. Applicants apply, participate in orientation, perform the physical fitness exam, have their criminal history screened, provide various documents, and participate in an interview. Those who pass this part of the process get a conditional job offer. This is vastly different from the usual job fair where potential applicants just get basic information about jobs.
