About the Program

Category: County Resiliency (Best in Category)

Year: 2021

In the summer of 2020, the Oakland County Board of Commissioners (BOC) established its Native Plants Initiative, a program that is designed to educate residents on the benefits of native plant species and provide them with tools to take action in their own gardens. Native plant species aid in the prevention of the spread of invasive species that pose a threat to the environment in Oakland County, as they degrade habitats in natural areas. Through the Native Plants Initiative, Oakland County residents sign an environmental stewardship pledge and are given bundles of native flora with information on how to plant and care for them. Residents learn about flora that is indigenous to Michigan so they can plant them in their own gardens to restore damage caused by invasive and non-native species and promote the benefits of native gardens.
