The APS Program & Planning Division launched the New Freedom Transportation Program in August 2017 to provide non-fixed route transportation and mobility management services, sensitive to the needs of older adults and adults with disabilities. The program provides entirely new transportation services to older and dependent adult residents of Los Angeles County and is intended to enhance quality of life, maintain independence, and improve overall health and well-being. As residents grow older, the independence associated with owning and operating a personal vehicle becomes less possible as well as sometimes dangerous. Since its inception in 2017 New Freedom has encompassed three (3) distinct transportation programs â a Taxicab program, a Volunteer Driver Reimbursement program and a Door Assistance program â to provide services to older and dependent adults based on their needs. As of February 2019, New Freedom has provided more than 3,000 one-way rides to older and dependent adults throughout Los Angeles County, which translates to more than 1.2 million total miles traveled.
