About the Program

Category: County Resiliency (Best in Category)

Year: 2016

The Montgomery County, Maryland Solar and Advanced Energy Initiative is an innovative and cost-effective approach to installing solar photovoltaic systems on public and commercial facilities. The initiative is one of several programs focused on reducing the environmental impacts of County operations and contributing to the County’s aggressive greenhouse gas reduction goals. The County will ultimately develop a minimum of six megawatts of solar photovoltaic systems on County facilities, enough energy to power over 650 homes. The County anticipates savings of at least $11 million over the 20 year life of the systems. The systems also are part of the County’s efforts to lead by example and encourage residents and businesses to take similar actions. All system performance data will be available through the County’s website and on digital displays in facilities with high public traffic.
