On May 7, 2009, the Miami-Dade Police Department introduced to Miami-Dade County citizens its Mobile Operations Center Vehicles. Each of the seven Police Services district stations is assigned a Mobile Operations Center Vehicle, a 28-foot, 20,000 pound, self-contained vehicle. These vehicles provide the Miami-Dade Police Department with the opportunity to increase their amount of community outreach and bring police services closer to the citizens. One of the most notable examples of a community outreach program that utilizes the Mobile Operation Centers is the Major’s Outreach, where district majors walk in various residential and business communities within their districts twice a month. These Mobile Operations Center Vehicles can also provide high visibility in communities where it is needed. In areas experiencing a rise in crime trends, it allows for the placement of an enhanced police presence. Although the main function of the vehicles is community outreach within the Mobile Operations Centers operating as storefronts, they are occasionally used as command posts for critical incidents, special events and perimeters. Additionally, when the vehicles are not being deployed for specific missions, they can also be utilized to provide various services to the public such as fingerprinting, criminal history checks, clearance letters, child identifications and criminal registration.
