About the Program

Category: Human Services (Best in Category)

Year: 2018

After learning from a Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) homelessness survey that child support assistance is among the top contributing factors to veteran homelessness and one of the highest unmet veteran needs, the Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) added a military and veteran liaison to its staff. The role is designed to serve as an in-house expert on the familial, legal, financial and career intricacies of the armed forces. Since the creation of this role, DCSS has also partnered with a host of veteran-focused organizations to share information, collaborate and ultimately address the unmet needs of the San Diego’s large population of active duty service members with child support cases. These partners include the VA, Fleet and Family Support Services, the San Diego Military Family Collaborative, the San Diego Veteran’s Coalition, California Veteran’s Legal Task Force, Veteran’s Village San Diego, the Office of Military and Veteran Affairs and many more. These partnerships bring resources to what has grown into a small team of DCSS military and veteran liaisons serving every region of San Diego County.
