The Miami-Dade Public Library System’s YOUmake Miami program is an innovative new space located inside the Miami Beach Regional Library. YOUmake Miami offers the public a safe and nurturing environment where they can have fun and get involved in the worldwide maker movement. YOUmake Miami presents a wide array of activities such as: 3D modeling and 3D printing, filmmaking, photography, sewing, arts & crafts, music production and graphic design. The public can choose from a variety of workshops for pure enjoyment or for their professional development. Patrons in YOUmake learn using the SMART Board, SMART Table, sewing machines, 3D printers, iMac desktops, MacBook laptops, iPads, Surface Pros, video cameras, microphones and digital pianos. They can also sharpen their skills with using software such as Adobe Creative Cloud, Logic Pro, SketchUp, 123 Design and Microsoft Office Suite. Many people come to YOUmake just to hang out and play video games and chess or to take painting, drawing and sketching classes. They also have the option to participate in 3D modeling, filmmaking and graphic design classes from the highly trained YOUmake staff. During the day parents can be found playing with their children using LEGO Jumbo Blocks and LEGO Mindstorms. Teens come in often to learn 3D modeling and 3D printing. Adults stream in to take computer classes, and senior citizens come in to stay active, creating arts and crafts like jewelry-making, painting and clay-making. Because of the library’s commitment to innovation, the YOUmake Miami space has changed the way the public views their local library. Patrons can now have new opportunities for digital learning, hands-on creativity and the development of their professional skills to equip them with the skills necessary for the 21st century workforce.
