Year: 2021

In response to the COVID-19 global pandemic, the Maricopa County Department of Public Health and the GIS Division collaborated to publish a comprehensive map and dashboard to provide citizens with information. On the map, community transmission levels based on CDC-aligned indicators can be viewed by ZIP Code, City, Unified School District, High School District and Elementary District. Pop-up reports generate a value for two weeks of an area's COVID-19 community transmission level and a link to review the recommended K–12 learning modes. Through the dashboard, citizens can view the county’s overall epidemic curves (by case, hospitalization and death), case epidemic curves by age group, total case counts, and a breakdown of cases by race, risk factors for severe illness. The dashboard also shows data related to outbreaks in long-term care facilities and K-12 schools. These simple tools have provided detailed and timely information throughout the health crisis to help citizens make decisions about operating schools, public events, churches, and businesses. They have also helped individual citizens make decisions regarding their responses to the pandemic. These tools will continue to provide information to the citizens of Maricopa County in the future when other public health information needs to be communicated efficiently.
