Consideration for an Achievement Award in PlanningLos Angeles County Master Plan for Sustainable Parks and Recreation: Phase I AbstractEvery community deserves a park. Imbedded with inclusive planning practices, the Los Angeles County Master Plan for Sustainable Parks and Recreation: Phase I, consists of Community Parks and Recreation Plans (CPRPs) that seek to provide equity for six disadvantaged, park-poor unincorporated communities in the County. The six communities, home to about 257,000 residents, are deficient in parks and trees, subjected to various environmental burdens, and generally characterized by low incomes, high crime rates, and high childhood obesity levels. The sustainability-focused CPRPs were multi-year process of data collection and analyses, community outreach and engagement, conceptual design work, and plan preparation that was completed by the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation (LA County Parks) in 2016, are. The plans address the unique park, recreation, and urban greening needs in each of the six communities. They identify specific high-priority park projects which are currently being implemented. The CPRPs reflect the type of intersectional and collaborative park planning that LA County Parks seeks to achieve with all unincorporated communities. The plans are not just about improving existing parks and creating new ones; they are concerned with advancing sustainability and enhancing overall quality of life for underserved communities in Los Angeles County.
