Natural disasters vary from one geographic location to another, and San Diego County is susceptible to major hazards including wildfires, earthquakes, flooding, and tsunamis. Such disasters often develop and escalate at a rapid pace, giving community members as few as 15 minutes to evacuate. As part of its mission to prepare the community, the County of San Diego Office of Emergency Services (OES) launched a web-based feature called the Know Your Hazards Map on July 31, 2017. This interactive online feature allows a user to search for hazards by location using a street address or by placing a pin on the map. From there, the feature displays customized information on the potential for wildfire, earthquake, flooding, and tsunami hazards at that location. The tool also includes important preparedness actions that can mitigate risks and protect families. To extend the reach of the tool, OES designed the Know Your Hazards Map so that users can access it via mobile device and in Spanish (Conozca sus Peligros). Since its launch, the feature has garnered approximately 13,500 views, been prominently featured on local news and received positive feedback via social media.
