Placer County created a collaborative feline care and adoption program with local non-profit organizations to explore creative ways to develop life-saving options for the most at-risk animals at the county animal shelter. At many shelters feral cats are often euthanized due to lack of resources that leave no options to offer a different outcome. Exploring alternative and creative solutions to the challenges faced by these type of animals was a challenge Placer County Animal Services decided to take on in an attempt to find homes for as many of these animals as possible. County staff met with several nonprofit organizations and developed a program with a few key partnerships to improve the lives of kittens and feral cats and reduce the number of animals that needed to be euthanized. The other goal to this program was to provide increased public awareness of feline overpopulation in the community, improve public perception of the county animal services division, and improve morale of the volunteers and staff who do not like to euthanize animals for any reason.
